THE SCHOOL GARDENS PROJECT

by CIDADES SEM FOME

Created in 2004 in Brazil, the non-governmental organization helps and trains inhabitants to manage their own activity to become financially independent through the creation of community gardens, school gardens or agricultural greenhouses in urban areas.

Thanks to its actions, the organization generates employment for the poorest inhabitants, while improving the nutrition of adults and children from these communities.

The school gardens project

The School Gardens project consists of rebuilding or maintaining more than fifty vegetable gardens in schools in the metropolis of Sao Paulo (Brazil). Two new school gardens are also created by the association in Itapevi. These gardens will provide healthy meals for more than 15,000 students per day.

By rehabilitating unused spaces in schools to build vegetable gardens, the association is raising awareness of the importance of good nutrition but also of sustainable agriculture, through the organic and low water consumption cultivation of vegetable gardens.

The vegetable gardens will be used to serve meals to students, thanks to the fruits and vegetables harvested. The children will thus benefit from a better nutritional quality in their meals.

Thanks to local agriculture, the association allows several thousand children and their families to have access to quality food at a lower cost. By raising children’s awareness of environmental protection and the importance of good nutrition, the association also helps improve the health of the inhabitants.
